not all skiing looks the same
Cross-country Skiing (XC Skiing) – also known as Nordic skiing – uses narrower, lighter skis and boots than downhill alpine skiing, which means you can easily go down and up gentle slopes. Unlike resort skiing, you’re not dependent on the chairlift. XC skiers move under their own power, gliding along groomed trails or fresh snow through open snowfields and snow gum forests.
It’s a full body workout, a genuinely enjoyable way to spend a winter day, and one of the easiest snow sports to learn within an hour or two.
◆ what’s the difference between xc and backcountry skiing?
Cross-country skiing is done on relatively flat or gently rolling terrain, often on prepared tracks, using lightweight gear to efficiently cover distance—more like endurance travel on snow.
In contrast, backcountry skiing takes place in natural, ungroomed mountain terrain and involves both climbing (usually with skins) and descending, often in deep snow. It requires wider skis, more technical skills, and awareness of hazards like avalanches, making it more about exploration and riding than simply moving across the landscape. Just finished the level 2 alpine course. Again, excellent instruction and knowledge concerning glacier travel, long toping, short-roping,, and crevasse rescue. Thanks Hamid and Lachlan
Hamid was our instructor for both courses and he had an incredible in his teaching style – the right amount of information and theory mixed in with practical application and loads of fun. I had no knowledge about how to climb in Alpine environments prior to these courses. These courses have provided me with essential skills and knowledge to feel more confident going to Mera Peak.
A big thank you to Hamid and The Climbing Company for offering such a great course so close to Melbourne! Would highly recommend.

two styles of Cross Country skiing to explore
Not sure which is right for you? Your guide will assess your experience and point you in the right direction.

classic xc skiing
The traditional style. A natural, walking-like movement that’s easy to pick up and perfect for beginners. You’ll ski in parallel tracks on groomed trails, building rhythm and confidence as you go. Most people start here.
Skate Skiing
A more athletic style that looks similar to ice skating that can be done on either groomed trails or fresh snow. You push off the edges of the skis in a V-shape motion, generating speed and power across the snow. A great challenge for those with some XC experience looking to push further.

WE’LL MEET YOU AT falls creek
Where we’ll explore
Falls Creek is home to one of Victoria’s best groomed Nordic trail systems, winding through open snowfields and snow gum forests in the alpine high country. It’s a beautiful setting for a first lesson or a full day on skis.
As a Licensed Tour Operator we have a permit to operate across the alpine region, so your guide knows the trails and exactly where to take you.

XC skiing uses different skis and boots to alpine or backcountry skiing, they’re lighter and more flexible.
All equipment is available to hire at Falls Creek. We’ll provide recommended hire options when you book.
No.

You will need a daily Alpine Resort car park pass to access the area, which is around $60 per vehicle. Most people joining our tours like to carpool to split the cost, we’ll share all the details when you book.
A reasonable base fitness helps, particularly for skate skiing which is more physically demanding. Classic XC is very accessible and the pace is always matched to the group. If you can handle a moderate walk you’ll be fine.
Warm, layered clothing is key: thermals, a mid layer, and a waterproof outer shell. Gloves, a beanie, and sunglasses are essential. Avoid cotton. We’ll send a full clothing list when you book.
