Couch To Crag
A guided, confidence first pathway into outdoor climbing.
A six-month, small-group program designed to take you from uncertain beginner to a confident, independent outdoor climber with experienced guides and clear systems every step of the way.
This is structured progression done properly. No more guesswork or patchwork learning. Build real skills in real terrain.

Couch to Crag is built for people who know they want to climb outdoors, but don’t want to piece it together alone.
You might be:
→ A gym climber who can top rope or lead indoors but feels unsure how outdoor systems actually work
→ Someone brand new to climbing who wants to learn properly from the start
→ Climbing with friends but aware you’re relying on others for anchors, planning, and decisions
→ Keen to build real independence, not just collect random tips along the way
You don’t need to be strong, climb a certain grade, or have it all figured out. You just need the willingness to learn properly and show up consistently.
Most skills courses teach a specific system well.
Couch to Crag connects them.
Instead of attending a single day, learning something useful, and then hoping you remember it six months later, this program is designed as one integrated progression. Each session builds on the last, revisiting skills, reinforcing systems and compounding your confidence.
You’re not just collecting techniques. You’re building capability over time.

Structured, Sequential Learning
The progression is deliberate: anchors build into rope management, rope systems into decision-making, and decision-making into independence.

SMALL-GROUP COHORT
You progress with the same small group, building shared experience, accountability, and future climbing partners.

Real Terrain, Real Repetition
This is not classroom theory. It’s practical, hands-on time on real rock, with space to practise properly.

Guide Support on the Whole Journey
You’re not starting from scratch each month. Your guides know where you’re at, what you’re working on, and what needs refinement.
The result is simple.
By the end of six months, you’re not just someone who has “done a few courses.”
You’re someone who understands how outdoor climbing works, and feels ready to head out on your own.
the 6-month progression
Couch to Crag is structured into three deliberate phases. Each builds on the last, so skills are layered properly and confidence grows naturally over time.

kick-off: Multi Pitch Taster
Your first day with Couch to Crag is a full day out climbing. You’ll head out with your cohort for a guided multi-pitch climb, the kind of objective you’ll be doing independently by September.
Get a feel for the program, meet your guides and decide whether it’s right for you.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
- 1 Full Day Guided Multi-Pitch

Phase 1: Core Systems
We begin outside, building essential rope, anchor, and belay systems in real rock environments from the very first session.
You’ll learn how anchors actually function, how rope systems interact and how to move with clarity instead of copying what someone else does.
included courses:
- Top Rope Anchors & Abseiling
- Learn to Lead (Indoors)

Phase 2: Applied Outdoor Climbing
This is where gym-based lead skills are transferred onto real rock. You’ll learn how bolted routes differ from indoor setups, how anchors are managed outside, and how to make sound decisions in real terrain.
This is the phase where things start to click. You’re no longer just supervised, you’re becoming capable.
included courses:
- Indoor to Outdoor Conversion
- Single Pitch Trad

Phase 3: Extended & Self-Reliant Climbing
With strong foundations in place, we expand the scope.
Longer routes, more complex systems and greater efficiency. And an introduction to rescue awareness so you understand what to do if things don’t go smoothly.
You leave knowing what you’re doing, and what you’re ready for next.
included courses:
- Multi Pitch Trad
- Essential Rescue Skills

By the End of Couch to Crag, You’ll Have Built:
◆ Real Confidence in Outdoor Environments
- Climb outdoors without second-guessing every decision
- Feel calm and prepared at the crag
- Know what to do next instead of waiting for someone else
◆ Solid, Repeatable Systems
- Build and assess anchors with understanding, not guesswork
- Manage ropes, transitions, and communication confidently
- Lead on real rock knowing how the system works, not just how it looks
◆ Decision-Making That Holds Up Under Pressure
- Move efficiently through longer routes
- Recognise and adjust when something doesn’t go to plan
- Understand what you’re ready for next – and why

Let’s Talk Gear.
You don’t need to own anything to start.
For Phase 1, we provide all required equipment. If you already have your own harness, shoes, or helmet, you’re welcome to use them.
From Phase 2 onward, you’ll begin building your own outdoor kit.
To make this simple, we offer a pre-selected, climb-ready gear package. It includes everything you’ll need, chosen deliberately so you don’t have to research, compare, or guess.
If you’d prefer to source your own gear, we’ll provide a clear equipment list along with recommended suppliers so you can work through it in your own time.
The goal is for you to finish the program confident not only in your systems, but in the gear you’re using.
frequently asked questions
No.
Learn to Lead is built into the program early on, and we run it in a controlled indoor environment before transferring those skills onto real rock. That sequence is intentional.
You don’t need prior lead experience. You just need to be ready to learn it properly.
Not at all.
The program begins with the Kick Off: Multi-Pitch Taster, a guided day out that eases you into the experience before the structured coursework begins. From there, it builds deliberately from foundational outdoor systems upward. Many participants start with little or no outdoor experience.
What matters most isn’t how much you know right now. It’s your willingness to show up, practise, and progress consistently.
Pay your deposit, then join us for the taster day. It’s a full day out where you get to experience the program, meet your guides and get a feel of what you’ll be able to do independently by the end of the program.
If it’s a hell yes: make your first payment within 48hrs and your spot is locked in. If it’s not quite right: no further commitment required. Your deposit covered the day and we’ll point you towards something better suited.
Consistency matters. The program builds step by step.
If something unavoidable comes up, we’ll look at the safest way to catch you up before the next phase. That might mean joining an alternate course date or booking a short private session to cover key systems.
Because the progression is sequential, extended gaps are not ideal. The value comes from staying in the rhythm.
Yes.
Couch to Crag is designed for gym climbers transitioning outdoors properly. Whether you currently top-rope or lead indoors, the program builds the systems required for independent outdoor climbing.
You don’t need higher grades. You need context and structure.
You don’t need to climb a particular grade.
A reasonable base level of fitness helps, but the focus is on systems, judgement, and efficiency rather than strength. Good decision-making and clean systems matter far more than brute force.
We’re building capable climbers, not chasing numbers.
We’ll be climbing at established outdoor locations across Victoria, depending on the phase of the program.
We’ll arrange accommodation for the weekends we do Single Pitch Trad and Multi Pitch Trad at Dyurrite/Mt Arapiles. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transport and accommodation all other times. We’re always happy to offer recommendations.
Planned locations include:
Top Rope Anchors & Abseiling: Geboor, Camel’s Hump Mt Macedon
Indoor Learn to Lead: GravityWorx Indoor Gym, Pascoe Vale
Sport Climbing Indoor to Outdoor: Geboor, Camel’s Hump Mt Macedon
Single Pitch Trad: Dyurrite, Mt Arapiles
Multi Pitch Trad: Dyurrite. Mt Arapiles
Essential Self Rescue: Werribee Gorge
Locations may shift slightly depending on conditions, but the objectives remain consistent.
For the two courses held at Dyurrite Mt Arapiles, yes. We’ll organise accommodation for both weekends and run through the details with you closer to the dates.
All other courses are at locations within two hours of Melbourne, so no accommodation is needed, unless you’d like to make a trip of it yourself.
By the end of the program, you’ll have a solid foundation and a clear sense of your next objective.
Some graduates move into advanced clinics or multi-pitch projects. Others book private guided days for specific goals. Many simply start planning independent climbing weekends with their cohort.
The program doesn’t close a chapter. It opens one.
Couch to Crag is structured as a six-month cohort progression, and your place is reserved for the full program.
For that reason, refunds are not available once the program has commenced.
If something unavoidable arises, you may transfer to the next available cohort or receive credit for the remaining courses to use within 12 months.
If circumstances change, talk to us early. We’ll work through a practical solution while maintaining the integrity of the cohort.

why learn with the climbing company
The Climbing Company has been running outdoor climbing programs in Victoria since 1988. Aaron founded Melbourne Climb School in 2015 to focus specifically on structured skills development. The two merged in 2022, combining deep outdoor education roots with deliberate, progression-based training.
Couch to Crag is built on decades of real-world experience.
This program isn’t a new idea. It’s the result of years of refining what actually builds capable, independent climbers.
The guides you’ll learn with are ACIA certified, highly experienced, and genuinely invested in helping you understand what you’re doing, so you’re in safe hands.
JUST TRY IT, its literally for an experience level.
