Skiing at the resort?
Take your skills from lifts to backcountry terrain.

If you’re comfortable skiing Blue lines at a resort and starting to look beyond the boundaries, you’re in the right place.
The move from resort to backcountry is not about skiing steeper lines or chasing bigger mountains. It is about learning how to travel safely and responsibly in unpatrolled terrain, without lifts, signage, or ski patrol.
When the environment changes, the responsibility shifts. Systems matter more.
You may be thinking:
“I’m a strong skier, so I’ll probably be fine.”
“I just need touring gear and I’m good to go.”
“Backcountry is too dangerous. That’s for experts.”
“I’ll have to go to New Zealand to learn properly.”
Here’s the reality:
And no, you do not need bigger peaks to build real skills. Australia’s alpine terrain is an excellent classroom, and you can begin learning in a single weekend.
Your First Step:
join backcountry ski 1
Backcountry Ski 1 is the cleanest and safest first step beyond the resort. It is designed specifically for competent resort skiers who are ready to expand where and how they ski.
Backcountry Ski 1 will allow you to:
- Understand how terrain influences risk
- Build structured avalanche awareness from the ground up
- Learn proper gear use and group travel systems
- Develop route selection skills in real winter conditions
- Make decisions based on information, not assumption
Backcountry skiing takes you beyond groomed runs and ski patrol into pristine, untracked terrain. This course ensures you step into that environment with clarity rather than guesswork.

Practical, Hands-On Learning

If You Are Wondering About Gear
You will need touring gear for this course. If you do not own it yet, we provide a clear hire list and recommendations so you can access suitable equipment without committing to purchases straight away.
Just finished the level 2 alpine course. Again, excellent instruction and knowledge concerning glacier travel, long toping, short-roping,, and crevasse rescue. Thanks Hamid and Lachlan
Hamid was our instructor for both courses and he had an incredible in his teaching style – the right amount of information and theory mixed in with practical application and loads of fun. I had no knowledge about how to climb in Alpine environments prior to these courses. These courses have provided me with essential skills and knowledge to feel more confident going to Mera Peak.
A big thank you to Hamid and The Climbing Company for offering such a great course so close to Melbourne! Would highly recommend.
