Indoor Climbing Instructor Assessment
A qualified Indoor Climbing Instructor (ICI) can instruct, teach and supervise people developing independent skills on indoor/artificial walls, including teaching lead climbing and associated skills.
Assessment Course
To be issued a qualification as an ACIA Indoor Climbing Instructor, completion of the following is required:
- Completion of the training course (or exemption from training granted)
- Logged experience showing at least 5 days (equivalent) teaching/supervising lead climbing (assisting / co-instructing)
- Logged experience, personal climbing, minimum 50 routes led (and 50 routes belaying a lead climber), variety of venues.
- Successful completion of the 1-day practical assessment course – competence with all aspects of the syllabus and all prerequisites is required, assessment to involve instruction to model clients (real climbers at appropriate skill level)
- Successful completion of theory tasks (creation of session plan for practical teaching day)
- Current first aid qualification
Our group spent the weekend with Aaron learning Anchoring, abseiling, and top roping skills. His teaching methods were very clear and understandable. He was calm, professional, and reassuring, which is what I personally needed due to my fears of risk and heights. By the end of the course I was able to confidently place an anchoring system that I was confident in and took away the skills that would allow me to do it outside of the class environment.

Did the two-day Indoor Learn to Lead course with The Climbing Company and had a great experience. Aaron was an excellent instructor — really clear, patient, and focused on safety throughout.
The progression of the course was really well structured. We started with the more basic belay devices and techniques to make sure we properly understood the fundamentals, then worked our way up to assisted-braking devices like the GriGri. We covered a lot over the two days without ever feeling rushed.
I came away feeling much more confident with lead climbing and belaying. Highly recommend the course and Aaron as an instructor!

Had a fantastic experience completing my lead climbing training. The instructors were both excellent, attentive, knowledgeable and always focused on safety. The small group format meant plently of opportunities to practice belaying, clipping and climbing with personalised coaching and feedback. Highly recommend for anyone looking to build confidence and skills in lead climbing!
The entire Lead course was fantastic, and I learned so much from it.
Aron and Jack were both very responsible and professional. They explained each technique in detail, including how to use the equipment properly and the common mistakes to avoid. They also pointed out many of the mistakes we made during the practical sessions and helped us understand how to improve.
