Climbing Instructor Training
Participants on CI courses must have progressed through the previous levels, they need to have significant broad personal climbing experience and professional experience at SPG and MPG level. The CI qualification covers the skills to teach and instruct all aspects of rock climbing / abseil activities including teaching trad lead climbing, climbing coaching / movement, multi pitch climbing, complex rescue scenarios etc.
Entry Requirements:
It is expected that candidates in the CI training program are experienced SPGs, have completed the MPG training course and are experienced lead climbers. Candidates should apply to the ACIA office with evidence of their suitability including details of the following minimum requirements:
- Five years of climbing experience (minimum of 2000 metres/year) on a variety of rock types and including climbs up to grade 16.
- Three years of regular guiding and/or instruction.
Our group spent the weekend with Aaron learning Anchoring, abseiling, and top roping skills. His teaching methods were very clear and understandable. He was calm, professional, and reassuring, which is what I personally needed due to my fears of risk and heights. By the end of the course I was able to confidently place an anchoring system that I was confident in and took away the skills that would allow me to do it outside of the class environment.
Had Aaron teach me and three others over two days. Very informative and answers any questions you have with climbing with confidence. Over all great person and teacher

Aaron, Hamid and the rest of the team are amazing, approachable teachers who make you feel safe and confident no matter what level you are at. I’ve been along to trips for kids and undertaken courses myself and have only had positive experiences. Highly recommend.

Completed the Alpine Skills Course with The Climbing Company over the weekend and couldnt be more happy with it. Pauly was excellent and really clear in his lessons, He also created a great friendly environment. I will 100 percent book with The CIimbing Company and Pauly again!
I recently completed the Alpine 1 course with The Climbing Company and had an absolutely amazing experience. This was my first time learning proper alpine skills, including abseiling, rope skills and knots, using crampons, different techniques for walking on snow, self-arrest techniques and using an ice axe.
Pauly was a fantastic instructor — incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, patient and supportive. I really liked the way he taught us. He would clearly explain and demonstrate each skill first, then give us plenty of opportunity to practise it ourselves while guiding us and correcting us along the way. He made everything easy to understand and created a really comfortable environment where you could ask questions, have a go and keep practising.
The course was very hands-on, which I really enjoyed. Being completely new to these skills, I walked away with so much more knowledge, practical experience and far more confidence than I walked in with. I never felt intimidated or out of place while learning.
We also had an amazing group, which made the experience even better. Everyone was friendly, supportive and encouraging, and there were plenty of laughs while learning together.

Me and my friend enrolled in both the Single-Pitch and Multi-Pitch Trad courses over a full week while we were staying in Natimuk. We read that The Climbing Company were the best guides to teach us Trad skills at Mt Arapiles and we were not wrong. Aaron was an incredible teacher, making us feel competent and confident within as short as a day (with prvious outdoor sport climbing experience) to tackle single pitches across raps over the next few days. He tried his best to schedule the course for us within short notice. Returning for the Multi-pitch course after a few days of climbing by ourselves really cemented why it’s so essential to learn from experienced professionals. There were so many small but critical skills that Aaron taught us that seemed to be emerging techniques becoming the standard in safety for building anchors on multi-pitch climbs. After the two days of the course we felt so confident to tackle some multi-pitches of our own (Siren, Agamemnon, Brolga, Panzer, Arachnus). We were taught skills related to abseiling, descending when in situations where the rope isn’t long enough, or when communication is poor (which we put to use not long after the course).
It was an incredible privilege to learn from a guiding company with serious history and, to hear that they have been active in the involvement with the positive resolution of Mt Arapiles future climbing with respect to the First Nations communities’ cultural heritage.
I couldn’t recommend The Climbing Company enough for anyone wanting to learn or wanting a refresher in the world of Trad Climbing. We are already planning our trip back to Mt Arapiles, and keen on reading into the Big Wall course also offered.
