Taking your single-pitch trad-climbing skills on longer, multi-pitch routes can seem like an even scarier prospect than trad climbing was in the previous course, but again once you have covered the techniques you will find it not nearly as scary and will discover an even more amazing aspect of the vertical world you already love.

What will we learn?

Among the skills covered in this course are:

  • Planning your day before you start, preparing for any eventuality
  • The importance of clear, concise communication on multi-pitch routes
  • Additional types of anchor systems
  • Additional belay techniques
  • Smooth transitioning from top-belay to lead-belay while on the wall
  • The importance of staying vigilant even after arriving at the top
  • Preparing equipment for a walking descent, or –
  • Using two ropes for very-long abseils

See Duration below as this differs depending on the current skill level.

Location

This course is held on an outdoor location on real trad climbing routes. The area we climb at and the grade of the routes will be tailored to the group participant’s skill levels.

Duration

2 days for participants who have Single-Pitch trad skills already, or 4-days for those with lead-or sport-climbing skills only, or 6 days for top-rope climbers or those who have never climbed before. Expect 6 hours of teaching time per day.

What do we need to own/bring?

The only piece of equipment you need to own before this course is a standard climbing harness suitable for lead-climbing indoors. All other climbing safety equipment is provided by us, however if you own any of the following equipment please bring it along with you – learning with your own equipment is far better and will provide a great start to your outdoor climbing experience!

  • Helmet *
  • One locking ‘biner suitable for belaying
  • One belay device
  • If you own a chalk bag, rope, quickdraws, slings and any other sport- or trad-climbing equipment please let us know prior to the course, and we can plan to teach you using your own gear instead.
    * Helmets are worn on all outdoor Climbing Company/Melbourne Climbing School courses – but as with all of the other climbing safety equipment, we have these if you don’t own one, and we will not charge any extra for their use on the course.
    Closed footwear such as tennis shoes are fine for learning on if you do not own climbing shoes.
    Non-climbing gear: You will need to bring suitable clothing and footwear for light hiking, and your own lunch and water for the day (and a camera!).

Our group spent the weekend with Aaron learning Anchoring, abseiling, and top roping skills. His teaching methods were very clear and understandable. He was calm, professional, and reassuring, which is what I personally needed due to my fears of risk and heights. By the end of the course I was able to confidently place an anchoring system that I was confident in and took away the skills that would allow me to do it outside of the class environment.

I booked the Alpine Course 1. It was quite a large group that was then divided into 2 smaller groups, which I really appreciated as it meant that my course instructor Darcy was able to provide more personalised feedback. We were taught the basic skills required to move safely in the mountains in winter. I would highly recommend the course! Darcy was great and I learnt lots

Absolutely fantastic time doing alpine 1 and 2. Personally coming from a hiking and trekking background with the goal to do some technical mountains, I could not recommend it more. Gained a lot of skills which are definitely going to be used, and Hamid our teacher, has a lot of knowledge that he is more than willing to share. Would definitely recommend it.

We did the Single Pitch Trad Course with The Climbing Company at Arapiles. We had the absolute best time and learned so much. The course was run only with a small group (4 participants) so we each got lots of personal attention & guidance throughout the weekend. Our guide Aaron was super professional, friendly & a great instructor, no question was too silly, he matched our excitement, and made sure we all felt confident leading an easy trad route & building anchors by the end of the weekend. I could not recommend the climbing company highly enough and discussion about the next course with them already started on the weekend.

Thank you Aaron, it was such an awesome weekend. So enjoyable to get so much time climbing and you’re an excellent teacher, you’re very supportive and encouraging.
So exciting to be able to go out and do some baby trad now! Definitely keen to come back and do the multipitch course at some stage.
I’d really recommend this course for anyone looking for a doorway into trad climbing, the small group size and excellent teaching make it a guaranteed great weekend. 🙂
